Generating excitement is what it’s all about at Abilene Christian University’s Delta Theta Sorority. Located just a stone’s throw from Dallas, Abilene Christian is known for its vibrant student organizations and its close-knit community.
So when Lauryn Pinner, Carisa Davis and their team of 25 sorority sisters set out to raise money for improvements in their house, they figured it would be easy. After all, the new Performing Arts Center had just raised $16 million for building-related expenses, so campus friends and alumni were obviously in a giving mood.
But as anyone who has run a fundraiser knows, people can feel tapped pretty quickly. And a recently completed capital campaign combined with a dwindling economy can spell bad news for a student group seeking a few extra dollars, no matter how friendly the folks on campus may be.
Determined to not repeat the mistakes of other student groups (bake sales, car washes, raffles that lost money), Lauryn and Carisa sought a program that would maximize effort and minimize work. Between classes, homework, and sorority activities, the group’s time was at a premium. She needed a fundraiser idea that would be quick, easy to do, and had no risk at all for the chapter.
Delta Theta’s answer came from CampusFundraiser and its Family and Friends Magazine program. Drawn initially by the promise of an easy program with no up-front money, the sisters sold just one magazine subscription each for three days and earned almost $2,800. “We had so much success because the girls were so excited about pledging and the leaders really kept them on track.” says Lauryn. And with three other groups at Abilene Christian University doing programs, CampusFundraiser figures the word is spreading of Delta Theta’s success.
A mere two months after they started, these two student leaders and the rest of the gang are delighted with the results.
