When spring comes around every year, different people get excited for different reasons. Some get excited about the warmer weather, some get excited because of spring break. But one thing that just about everyone in America gets excited about is that the coming of spring means that baseball is just around the corner! Outings to the ballpark have long been an American tradition. Spring training, starting in February of every year, has always been a sure sign that spring is truly around the corner.
For the Penn State Baseball Club at Penn State University spring means a whole lot of travel and tournaments. The team competes in the National Club Baseball Association in the New Penn West Conference. But don’t call these guys amateurs: The team has won the New Penn West Conference for the past five years! They’ve even reached the NCBA World Series in each of the first four years that the league has been around.
College baseball teams, not unlike the pros, also attend spring training every year. As exciting as this is, it can also be a stressful times for teams whose school does not provide enough funding for them to attend without any extra out of pocket expenses. The Penn State Baseball Club was having just this problem. The out of pocket expense was just too high for the players, and what is supposed to be an exciting time of the year turned into a time plagued by financial stress. The club realized that in order for them to play, that they were going to have to hold a fundraiser.
Last spring, knowing that past approaches, like raffles, donations, and dues were not very effective, group member Greg Lisa contacted the National Club Baseball Association, and found out about CampusFundraiser, a company that helps college students hold fundraisers, with no cost to the students. He contacted them and held a fundraiser that earned $2,150 for his team. So when the team was having financial problems again this spring, Greg knew where to turn.
Greg says that the fundraisers are “easy and painless, and require very little coordination from our end.” He was also very excited that it took less than four hours, since like money, time is very scarce for college students. They ended up making $1,284 in just four hours! He also states that “they realize that in order for our club to play, we must perform fundraisers, hence they were okay with putting a few hours into one.” Of course, just about anyone would be okay with putting a few hours into a fundraiser if it removes the stress from Spring Training, leaving nothing but excitement!
Now that the club has enough money to attend Spring Training, they can get ready for another big year!
CampusFundraiser can help your group successfully raise money too. Find out how.
